Samsung NX1 discontinued in Europe? Rumors say 'yes' (update: confirmed in Germany)

A story on video blog EOSHD claims that Samsung has discontinued its NX1 mirrorless camera across Europe. An email that one of the site's forum users claims to be from Samsung states that 'in Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of NX1 cameras for now since there is already much better and upgraded cameras'. We're skeptical about this rumor and have reached out to Samsung for comment, so stay tuned. Update: Confirmed in Germany. Read more.

Nikon announces development of flagship D5 DSLR

In a brief press release, Nikon announced the development of its D5 digital SLR, which will be the company's next flagship camera. There aren't any real details in the release, other than the expected promise of better performance and image quality. A new SB-5000 Speedlight and WT-6 Wireless Transmitter are also on the roadmap. Read more

Ricoh introduces designed-for-digital HD Pentax-D FA645 35mm F3.5 prime

Ricoh has announced a new wide-angle prime for its Pentax 645D/645Z medium format digital bodies. This lens' name is a mouthful: HD PENTAX-D FA645 35mm F3.5 AL [IF]. The top-line specs are that it acts as a 27.5mm (in 35mm terms) on a digital 645 body, has a minimum focus distance of 0.3m, giving a maximum magnification ratio of 0.25x. Read more

The Samsung NX500 is the baby brother to the company's superb NX1 mirrorless camera. It brings over many of the features of the NX1, including its 28MP BSI CMOS sensor and AF system, and puts them into a compact body at a price competitive with other midrange mirrorless models. Read more

Toshiba to sell sensor business to Sony for $165 million

Toshiba is finalizing plans to sell its image sensor business to Sony for an estimated $165 million (¥20 billion) in a bid to raise cash after a $1.3 billion accounting scandal. Toshiba has been unloading assets as part of its restructuring plan. Sony currently has 40% of the growing image sensor market, and is quadrupling spending to keep up with demand.

Fujifilm brings weather-sealed 35mm F2 lens, 1.4x teleconverter to X-mount

Fujifilm has added another lens to its X-mount, this one being a low-cost Fujinon XF 35mm F2 prime. This compact lens features a nearly silent internal AF system, 9-blade circular aperture, 2 ED elements, and is sealed against moisture and dust. Also announced is a 1.4x teleconverter, which is currently only compatible with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 zoom. It will, however, be compatible with future lenses, including the XF 100-400mm super telephoto lens expected next year. Surprise! Sony announces RX1R II with 42MP sensor and EVF

Sony has announced its Cyber-shot RX1R II, an update to 2013's RX1 and RX1R full-frame, fixed-lens compact cameras. The RX1R II brings a 42.4 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor borrowed from the a7R II, 35mm F2 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens, retractable viewfinder, variable low-pass filter and greatly improved autofocus. Read more
