The EOS-M has horrible AF even with the update and I wouldn't recommend it for any beginner.

Thats because your not interested in the photo itself, your interested in the the technical aspects ofthe photo.
A 1.7 m43 lens lets just as much light in as a Medium Format 1.7 lens. Thus the industry standard where this is rated at 1.7.
