LG delivers 13MP flagship G2 smartphone

LG Mobile Communications CEO Dr. Jong-Seok Park unveils the G2, the company's latest flagship smartphone.

LG has released its much anticipated G2 smartphone at a press event today in New York City. The G2 becomes the electronics giant's flagship device, besting its predecessor, the Optimus G, in several key areas. LG Mobile CEO Jong-Seok Park took the stage of Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Hall to introduce what he immodestly referred to as, "the most advanced smartphone in history."

The G2 debuts what LG announced last month as the "world's thinnest" display, a 5.2-inch IPS LCD that is only 2.2mm thick. The G2 itself is only 2.7 inches wide and sports an impressively thin 0.1 inch bezel. The LTE phone is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 chipset, which incorporates both the modem and "system-on-chip" on the same silicon wafer, for greater efficiency and lower power consumption. And the G2 is powered by a 3,000mAH battery.

In seeking to address user ergonomics, LG has designed the G2 around the concept of a single set of rear buttons easily accessible with your index finger when holding the phone in portrait orientation. The power button and volume keys sit just below the camera lens. The volume  keys can be assigned to trip the shutter in both front and rear-facing camera mode. They can alternatively be assigned to digital zoom.

The LG G2 sports a 5.2 inch IPS LCD screen but keeps device size manageable with a thin 2.65mm bezel.
The only external controls on the G2 are located on the rear of the phone (just below the camera lens) for easy access while holding the phone.

The G2, like its predecessor the Optimus G, has a 13MP rear camera. What the G2 adds, however is an optical image stabilization system. The G2 will be available in both white and black. No availability dates have been announced, but in the U.S. the phone will be available through the four major wireless carriers.

The G2 houses a 13MP camera and optical image stabilization system in a very thin handset.
The G2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset.
