Promotional fiasco injures 20 at LG event

35
We had a hands-on with the 13-megapixel LG G2 last week.

What would you do for a new phone? At recent promotional event in Seoul, South Korea, twenty people were injured while trying to collect free phone vouchers from helium balloons for LG's new G2 smartphone.

LG released 100 balloons at the event, each with its own free phone ticket. Some attendees came equipped with BB guns and spears to try to retrieve the floating freebies.

The resulting chaos ended injured 20 people, sending 7 to a hospital. LG has taken full responsibility for the damages, promising to pay for any medical expenses.

Read more on the incident from the BBC.

It is too bad WKRP in Cincinnati is no longer around to parody this event.

Or maybe the Simpsons already did it?

What a sick world we're living in. People would maim someone for a gadget.

Materialism run amok.

People don't intend for something to happen and they label an unintended result 'accident'. This is true.

There are times when 'accident' may have some technical merit yet still be the wrong word to describe what happened.

Running through a crowd with a spear or firing a BB gun is irresponsible. The operator of the weapon may not have intended to hurt anyone and might claim 'accident'. However, that person has created a situation in which it is foreseeable (even likely) an injury could occur. Simply not considering what could be reasonably expected to happen doesn't make the incident an 'accident'.

Not running around shooting people on purpose is a lack of malicious intent.

Lack of malicious intent is not an 'accident' in the popular meaning of 'I didn't mean to so I am not responsible'. The fact that the BB bandit didn't really want to hurt anyone doesn't change the fact they created a situation requiring either luck or speedy reflexes and great agility to avoid injury.

I would think twice before buying another LG phone. The one I use now (LG Swift/Optimus L9 - P760) is complete disaster - crashing/freezing can't make or receive call. LG I don't believe you can make a good phone! Here is one of several videos, which I recorded, showing how the telephone is frozen and I can't make a call even at rescue number 112.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q1Og9hgiv4
Such crashes happen every day making the phone useless. So I wouldn't fight for the newer LG! Never!

I'm sorry that you have problems with yours.
I have an Optimus L9 P760 and I don't have any problems with it. Also 4 of my colleagues have the same phone and I didn't heard them complaining about crashes/freezing.
It could be something wrong hardware or software with your phone. Good luck!

Every once in a while they have fistfights in their legislature too. Koreans are certainly an entertaining lot.

Other G2 launch events being canceled for safety reasons (BBC report) means the balloon bit wasn't the only boneheaded idea to come down LG's marketing pike. Sure would like to know what the others were!

The publicity and the presupposition to the public that people are willing to injure themselves over a LG phone is well worth the money spent in hospital expenses. Ad agency won't be fired. Especially since LG has their own marketing division, and big companies in Korea never fire anyone.

Now, now...

Lets all be civilized in these things...

LG did the right thing by providing medical compensation, BUT there should be other things done as well:

1. Fire the AD company that came up with the idea and blacklist it in the industry.

2. Sentence the creative AD director who approved the scheme.

3. Charge the BB gun and spear users with cheating and endangering the public.

4. Fine LG for nuisance in a public place.

5. As an act of contrition, LG should give away 100 G2 phones to DPR comment posters for being silly enough to react and comment on their article at DPR.

why punish just the company when the people participating where a bunch of greedy idiots ?

Seriously. Using a gun or a spear just for a chance to get a mere gadget ?
What kind of a moron thought that was a good idea to begin with ?

If I used a BB gun to shoot down a balloon at a distance, I wouldn't expect to reach it before 58 other people did. None for me. Same for a spear (?!). Unless they were not throwing the spear but were it to poke balloons.

A good option might have been a balloon with double sided tape to snare a balloon. Could work, but I imagine both would then be speared or shot.

Really, sounds like a pie throwing contest with iron skillets.

At least it wasn't in the US where they would have used shotguns or AK47s to try to shoot the balloons out of the sky.

if it was in the USA (*) they'd have made it into a reality tv-show ...
or they would have sued LG into bankruptcy because they allowed idiots to act like idiots.
