Lumia Black update adds RAW file support for Nokia Lumia 1020

Nokia's Lumia Black software update is a major one for Lumia 1020 users who can now save images as lossless RAW files in DNG format.

AT&T began rolling out the software update today for Nokia Lumia 1020 and Nokia Lumia 1520 devices in the U.S.

Amongst the most notable changes for photographers is the addition of the Nokia Camera app, formerly exclusive to Nokia's new Lumia 1520 phablet and Lumia 2520 tablet. The app takes the best of the Nokia Smart Camera and Nokia Pro Camera apps and adds the ability to save photos as "RAW," or lossless DNG files.

Additional new features include:

  • Enhanced Glance Screen: the Lumia Glance Screen will now display all important notifications – new emails, missed calls, text messages and more – even when the screen is dark. Icons will now appear beneath the digital clock, which is currently offered as a feature of the Glance Screen.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy support: Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE) allows consumers to easily sync accessories such as heart rate monitors with their Nokia Lumia to create differentiated experiences with apps like Adidas miCoach.
  • Lock Screen Options: now, Lumia users can opt for either portrait or landscape mode to accommodate even greater customization and personalization.
  • Nokia Storyteller: Nokia Storyteller serves as the hub for your Lumia imaging experiences by collecting and organizing your images as stories based on the image time, date and/or location, enabling you to show and tell a more comprehensive story about an event or place.
  • Nokia Beamer: share experiences and ideas easily and instantly with friends or colleagues by projecting your phone screen to any HTML5 enabled screen; this includes documents, maps, location details, or even the camera viewfinder.
  • CMAS notifications for the Nokia Lumia 1520 such as Amber Alerts on 2G/3G/LTE.

To check for the Lumia Black update on your Lumia 1020 or Lumia 1520 from the start screen scroll down to and tap “Settings” > “About” > “More Info.” If the firmware revision matches the revision number listed in the “New Software Specifications” section below, then the device has the latest software available.

The Lumia Black update will start rolling out to other Nokia Lumia owners around the world in early 2014.

I like the dng images, doesn't have that sort of muddy look in the shadows of the jpegs. However, 2 of the 4 image handling/processing programs I use don't like them. Those 2 are Thumbs Plus 9 and DxO Optics Pro 0. The ones that work are LightRoom4/PhotoshopCS6 combo and PhotoNinja. This maybe because the Nokia RAW-to-DNG converter v01.00.06 is not the best, or because the output seems to be 36 bit images. The average file size is much larger at over 40mb.

Not only that, but the IQ in pureview mode should be much better as well.

If you can studio test the 1020 against the 808 post black update that would be great. The jpeg processing with black should be much closer to the 808.. hence.. better
