Vimeo adds filters to 'enhance' videos

10
Vimeo's filters range from subtle to extreme.

Filters aren't just for Instagram photos anymore. YouTube alternative Vimeo is now allowing users to choose from over 500 looks. The filters are temporarily free but will cost $0.99 each. Each "enhancement" can be adjusted from 0-100% intensity and can be viewed in a preview screen.

More from Vimeo's press release:

Today, Vimeo adds visual enhancements called Looks to its video Enhancer toolbox, so now everyone can apply high quality, stylistic visual effects to their videos in addition to the licensed music options currently available.

“By adding Looks, Vimeo continues to provide the tools that help people easily make better videos,” said Vimeo CEO, Kerry Trainor. “Nearly every minute you see on TV or in movies has been visually enhanced.  Everyone wants the same quality as the pros, but it’s out of reach for most people. Our aim is to make these types of high quality visual effects easy and accessible to everyone.”

Vimeo users can search through a robust library of more than 500 Looks, dynamically see each Look applied to a frame of their own video (not a stock image), compare against their original and preview the enhanced video in real-time. People can browse by genre or mood, browse recommended Looks, and save their favorites. Vimeo offers innovative customization options, including the ability to adjust the intensity for each Look from 0-100% and trim the Look to apply to any part of the video.

Some filtered videos actually do look better anyway. Using basic presets like this isn't really different to post editing. Please tell me the criteria for this....?

What is the software version of this? In other words, is there a program that you can easily use to do this to your own videos? An instagram-type program for video?

Filter effects are like putting pre-made sauce in a restaurant kitchen. And the baddest the meal may be, the bigger quantity of prefab sauce has to be pourred on the food. Is that cooking, really ?

Gave this a go last night on one of my older videos that needed some love. It was free and pretty painless! Only complaint was the low res playback until you commit to the filter, but at least you can save it as a new video (which I did).

Nice feature! Once they get this going on their app, vimeo could be a force to reckon with!

I don't even bother with Vimeo any more, You Tube had clearly won the game.

1$ per filter ? Is Vimeo insane. Youtube filter are free, but yes, there only a dozen filter. Anyway, it's more than enough to screw. up your video :) For me, the most useful is the stabilization and the video editing.

I'm not a fan of Instagram-filtered photos. I think people (at least the people I know), too often use it with reckless abandon.

I agree - and TV shows/movies that does the same (one prime example being Top Gear that regularly takes it so far that everything looks fake) is not pretty. But a touch of adjustment can often make things look better.

Let's not jump to disparaging conclusions here. "Looks" and grading are essential to professional video and most of your favorite movies, even the talky ones that have no visible special effects. With 500 choices, chances are (I sure hope) that Vimeo has plenty that are not Instagrammy, but are the type that we have not had the skill to pull off in video color correction software, if we even have it. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Choice is nice and as it is not compulsory, I see no problem. Some filtered videos actually do look better anyway. Using basic presets like this isn't really different to post editing; you just have less control, but in exchange save a lot of time.
