Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom gets Android 4.4 KitKat update

18

The Galaxy S4 Zoom, Samsung's first attempt to fit a zoom lens into an Android-powered smartphone-style body, is getting an update with the latest Android version, 4.4 KitKat. The new software version will give S4 Zoom users access to the KitKat improvements which include faster performance, a redesigned status bar, wireless printing support, full-screen album art in the media player and a camera shortcut on the lockscreen, plus updates to a few of Samsung's proprietary apps. It's not known at this point if the S4 Zoom will get any of the Galaxy K's new features.

As usual, the update will roll out over various regions during the next few weeks, this time starting in Russia. If you want to check if it's available yet at your location you can check in the About phone » Software updates section of the settings menu.  If you would like to have another look at the S4 Zoom's image quality you can check it out in our shooutout in which we pit it against the Sony Xperia Z1, LG G2 and Nokia Lumia 1020.

I'll take this camera with a 1" sensor from NX mini and a fixed 10mm f/2.5 lens. Please.

Exactly. We Nokia 808 users have all been doing the same - an Android-based, large-sensor camera with a non-zoom (prime) lens.

Because, as we all know, no other options exist. {sarcasm}

"Why?" Android + F3.1-6.3 combo. Worst from both worlds.

dzukela:

Android 4 is a good OS, and this is the only camera phone with an optical zoom.

Now sometimes Android has too much crapware.

Lolz. WRT Android, you certainly don't know what you're speaking about. Or, just don't want to learn anything more complicated than iOS or Windows Phone.

This seems like a reasonable trade off - larger profile for what, in theory, is a capable zoom.

I must say, given the RAW image quality and feature set of my NX300, and rumors of the professional level NX-1 at Photokina this year, Samsung seems to be putting its money where its mouth is in photography. Great to see.

Do you mean that you think this phone will shoot raw? I know Android 4.4 allows for raw, but has Samsung enabled it?

(I don't like these candy cookie names.)

I do not know whether it will shoot raw, but, I suspect low ISO jpegs will fair pretty well. I only mention raw because high ISO jpegs (along with poor buffer) are the Achilles heel of the mirrorless line-up for Samsung. So, any praise of the NX300 - and it largely deserves it - must specify good image quality at high ISO in terms of raw.

I know this article is about the updates. But, when was this originally released. It just never registered on my radar, but I'm not that savy when it comes to mobile phones.

b craw:

I'm well aware of the NX (APSC) system jpeg failings. That's one reason I ask about raw and this phone.
