Sony unveils phablet-sized Xperia Z Ultra

2
Sony's new Xperia Z Ultra "phablet" is the first mobile device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz quad-core processor, expected to improve battery life.

Sony went big with its latest mobile device unveiled today at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai: the 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra.

Sony's new oversized smartphone is large even by "phablet" standards — consider that the Samsung Galaxy Note II, the second generation of the device which drove the need for the phone/tablet hybrid term — measures 5.5 inches.

Its specs follow suit:

  • Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800, the Xperia Z Ultra is the first to sport the quad-core 2.2GHz processor
  • The 3000mAh battery pack is expected to provide 11 hours of battery life
  • 6.4-inch full HD 1920x1080 Triluminos display works with a stylus — or even a pen or pencil, according to Sony
  • Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
  • 16GB internal storage, with about 11 GB available to the user
  • MicroSD card slot for up to 64GB more storage
  • Just  212g and 179.4 x 92.2 x 6.5mm thin (but thicker than the 6.18mm Huawei Ascend P6)
  • Even more waterproofing than other Xperia devices at IP55/IP58: A waterproof headphone jack means you should be able to listen to music while underwater
  • Primary 8MP camera, 2MP front-facing camera
Of course, we're most interested to see how the primary 8-megapixel camera performs — hopefully better than Sony's flagship Xperia Z smartphone which we found didn't quite hold up to its promising specs.

While Sony didn't yet share pricing details, look for the Xperia Z Ultra this summer, available in black, white or purple.

I hope Verizon gets this when it comes out. A waterproof smartphone with 6.4" 1080p display is very interesting.

Nice specs. I own the Note 2 and I find that one already too big for one hand handling. At this rate soon we're gonna need 3 hands :)
