iPhone 5 ranks fifth in user satisfaction in the U.S.

31
The poll asked users to rank their satisfaction level out of 10. The iPhone 5 came in fifth amongst U.S. consumers.

Four Android phones rank higher in user satifaction than the iPhone 5, according to an OnDevice poll

The poll asked 320,000 smartphone and tablet users how they felt about their devices. Of the 93,825 users polled in the U.S., the Motorola Atrix lead with the highest overall user satisfaction. The Droid Razr, HTC Rezound and Samsung Galaxy Note 2 followed the Atrix, leaving Apple’s iPhone 5 in fifth place. In the UK, the iPhone 5 ranked second—behind the HTC One X.

CNET reported OnDevice's reaction to the poll:

"Although Apple created one of the most revolutionary devices of the past decade, other manufactures have caught up, with some Android-powered devices now commanding higher levels of user satisfaction," OnDevice Research marketing manager Sarah Quinn said in a statement.

The findings of the poll—initially released Monday—have been widely discussed by the tech blogosphere. Interestingly, they also come on the heels of a warning Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak recently gave about rising competition for Apple. As we reported last week, Wozniak was quoted in an interview as saying: "In my opinion Apple is currently lagging behind in terms of features. Others have caught up with us. Samsung is a great competitor simply because they are making great products at the moment."

Let's hear from you: Is the iPhone falling behind? What does Apple need to do to catch up?

Are the values the mean or median satisfaction of the users?

Without knowing that the numbers are wortheless.

Meanwhile, I looked up the original slides from the source given by DPR. To their credit, headline and graph are copied from that source.

My big complaint though:

The original source contains a graph BEFORE the graph shown here, and that chart (which is by manufacturer) shows Apple first and Samsung LAST. Quite a different message.

Also important to know: The data is from a mobile online poll where devices were identified by browser id. Such online poll results typically are very skewed as more vocal users dominate the result. A satisfied but productive user won't find the poll nor have the time to respond.

I am disappointed DPR just copied graph and headline w/o doing ANY research. Will stop looking at connect.dpreview.com.

What an awful graph. If you want us to take data from you seriously set the axes at zero.

Honestly, I thought we had moved beyond this.

(PS I do not own a smartphone of any make)

The statistics isn't significant to be quoted the way it is.

As said below, the difference is very small and the chart is drawn wrong.

Worse even, phones with thin market shares came out first. A typical sign of a badly executed study. This is why most serious score systems use some sort of combination of average and size.

And of course, responses to a subjective question can't be compared if the target audiences do differ. As is the case here.

So, the entire study is a waste of time and money and should probably be ignored by a serious journalist.

it needs a completely new ios overhaul would like to put apps in filing cabinet style and scrap the 12 app limit folders and add more apps in the folders, and make a parent file folder with sub folders of different categories and mix together apps documents photos, and notes neatly filed away within the file cabinet (s)..
also would like apple to improve the camera ie: 12mp and add more cool features to the camera app and apply filters and effects
also add more to the home and lock screen of weather, news, stocks at a glance as well as show if you have new mail, texts and reminders and please hope they finally put push email in the mail app

LOL are you kidding me?! Learn how to draw a graph correctly. The difference between 8.57 and 8.23 is 4%. That's not twice as much as the visuals of this graph make you believe.
4% also seems like too small of a difference that would be within the margin of error on such polls.

Time and time again 'connect' is trying to stir up a controversy to gain some traffic on their site.

Yawn!

I am taking statistics now and we just covered this, it is one of the most basic topics in elementary level statistics. It is either ignorance to publish such a graph, or it is downright deception. Mind, I hate apple.

Mind people - he hates Apple. Oooo. We need to know this why? Because the Androids aren't content just to use their excellent devices. They have to go out of their way to tell us that they HATE Apple. I've owned one smartphone. An iPhone 4s. It's a fine device. I have absolutely NO opinion or emotions about any other device or the people that use them. I just assumed they would be as happy with their choice as I was with mine. Apparently not. Apparently the enjoyment they gain from their choice is directly proportional to how often and how vehemently they can publicly express their HATRED for Apple. Wouldn't it be simpler just to buy an iPhone? ...:)

Have an Iphone 4 and love it but do not like the size of the 5. It's too long, I buy wrangler cargo pants at Wal-mart partly because the Iphone fits perfectly in the sleeve sewn behind the cargo pocket on the left side. The 5 probably doesn't fit in very many pockets . It does seem Apples Marketing people come from the same school of thought as Canon's.

I agree with the others here. Typical "Man Bites Dog" headline.
If Apple made a dozen different iPhone models (like Android, which is a swell phone btw), three of them would have made the top 5 !!!

Android doesn't make phones...

Technically you're right, Android doesn't make phones, but Android is owned by Google who do! Google make the Nexus and also bought Motorola's mobile phone business a year or two back which run Android.

Perhaps that is why these latest Motorola phones have got good reviews. Motorola used to be very poor and treated customers badly before the Google takeover so I wouldn't be surprised by these polls.

As far as the operating systems go, I think I give the edge to Apple iOS with 9/10 and Android 8/10 maybe 8½/10. Not much in it. Certainly in terms of market share, here in the UK where I am, Android's market share has always been high and a year ago it was something like 45% Android to 25% iOS. It is now radically much higher. Don't have those figures to hand for the UK but it was something like 85% Android to now less than 20% iOS. The US was always the reverse with Apple having biggest market share but even that has changed there too! Latest comscore data for US, Android 53% iOS 36%

As far as a user's rating goes, I went from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 5. I was looking forward to new features especially camera w/ flash. Also my 3Gs was beginning to show signs of death. I have a love/hate relationship with new phone. I love the camera including the flash. The touch response of the screen is finicky. Sunday the sound wouldn't work on the map when directions were requested. Had to shut down the phone and turn back on before I got audio directions. Sometimes I don't get texts for hours after someone sends it to me. Only 5 months old - thinking about taking it to Apple store and complaining about all the issues I have with it..

I had problems with my iPhone 3GS! and went through several on warranty. Then it ran fine for years. My 1 year old iPhone 4S...no problems. I cycled power on it at Christmas just to be nice.

Yeah it is like "Romney landed 2nd on 2012 US Presidential election" instead of mentioning Obama as the new president.

Just stating the obvious. This article had little to do with imaging with mobile devices. The word camera and photo is not even mentioned.

It is like a car stereo site publishing an article of driver satisfaction survey for cars in general.

This seems like a strange statistic. It sort of implies that users of the iphone 5 would be more satisfied with Droid Razr M, when that is likely not the case.

To me this shows that users of high end mobile phones are pretty happy and generally rank satisfaction in the 8-9 out of 10 range. It doesn't show which product is the best.

I wonder why you put the iPhone in the headline? Why not title "Two Motorola Smartphones Top the List"?

The way the headline reads now ("iPhone 5 ranks fifth in user satisfaction in the U.S.") it is not even clear that the poll is about smartphones only - which makes a 5th rank look rather disappointing for a very ambitious product.

Seeing the headline, i had (maybe stupidly?) assumed the poll was about all kinds of consumer products - cameras, radios, not just smartphones - and then a 5th rank would have been not as bad as when you compare smartphones only.

Yea.....people were pretty disappointed with the iphone 5. Its an update. Not exactly an upgrade though. More evolutionary vs revolutionary. All they added was a longer screen and lte. thats about it. its a great phone.

The 5s will be in the same boat(same size and form), Or else they are going to anger ALOT of manufactures(cases and accessories)/developers(their app store, the only thing keeping them alive right now).

Nothing is keeping them from releasing a 6. just dont see it happening. Apples like canon now.
