Videos offer peek at Sony Xperia Z camera

Sony's new ad campaign shows the Xperia Z smartphone capturing the Holi Festival in India, and standing up to a dousing of water to wash away the colorful powders used during the celebration.

As rumors surface about when and where customers in the U.S. can get their hands on Sony's latest flagship smartphone, Sony's ad campaign for the Xperia Z has us eager to try out the water- and dust-resistant device's 13-megapixel main camera.

While the smartphone is already available in Australia and other countries, no American carriers currently offer the Xperia Z, though a leaked image has some websites reporting the device will soon be sold through T-Mobile. So far, Sony has only been able to offer U.S. customers an unlocked version of the smaller Xperia ZL through its own website; this model is also not yet subsidized by any stateside operator.

We were intrigued by the Xperia Z's specs when we got to play with the device at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. The 5-inch smartphone offers a 1920x1080p resolution screen, LTE connectivity, runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and is powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and 2GB  of RAM.

Until we can put the device through our own rigorous testing, some behind-the-scenes videos from Sony's new ad campaign provide a look at the phone's camera capabilties. The company worked with director Tarsem Singh to demonstrate both the Xperia Z's ability to capture color at the the Holi Festival in India and to resist the elements as water is poured over the device to wash off the colorful powders used in the celebration:

Sony recently posted some behind-the-scenes videos on its blog showcasing the Xperia Z in action on the shoot, with commentary from Singh about how he found the phone's camera:

Is there any details about camera lens available. That is how wide to tele it is in terms of 35mm. Also details of aperture would help. Does anybody know this.

Well, the max. aperture is F/2.4 and the focal length is 4mm, hard to say what it is in 35mm terms.
