Getting ready to buy a new smartphone? If self-repair is one of your concerns, iFixit has you covered. Its new Repairability Index ranks the most popular smartphones by ease of repair—10 being the best, and 1 the worst.
The iFixit Smartphone Repairability Index includes many of the top smartphones for photography as well as some older models that provide some frame of reference. HTC, for example, seems to be making their flagship phones a little harder to fix. Its 2010 Surround smartphone scored a 5/10 while this year's HTC One earned a score to match its name.
Apple's latest iPhone offerings both scored a 6/10, worse than the 7/10 iPhone 5, but still much better than the original iPhone's 2/10.
On the top of the iFixit Repairability Index sits the Motorola Droid Bionic and Motorola Atrix 4G. Scoring an almost-perfect 9/10, the 2011 smartphones have easy to replace batteries — a top priority for the iFixit teardown team.
