Will the next iPhone have an all-aluminum body?

The new antennas can be built right into a future iPhone's casing.

Apple loves its aluminum. In the past decade, Apple has made most of its laptops in the light, sleek metal. Yet the iPhone has always eluded Apple’s all-metal body style because of its antenna.

When the iPhone 4 was released, the infamous "Antennagate" left many users without service when Apple didn’t think-through its metal siding and customers suffered reception problems. Even the iPhone 5 incorporates glass and plastic at the top and bottom of its backing in order to house its two-part antenna system.

A new Apple patent approved today by the United States Patent and Trademark Office describes “microslot antennas.” The new design builds the antenna into the casing—an innovation that would possibly reduce the size of future iPhones while hiding the antenna the device’s housing.
