Samsung debuts Galaxy Gear smartwatch

20

Samsung made its foray into the smartwatch game today, revealing the Galaxy Gear at the IFA exhibition in Berlin.

At first glance, Galaxy Gear appears most concerned with communication features, promising to relay calls, texts, emails and alerts. Hands-free calling is enabled via voice command, which also allows users to draft messages, create new calendar entries, set alarms and check the weather.

The camera capabilities are disappointing though — Galaxy Gear only offers a 1.9-megapixel camera, a far cry from the 41-megapixel model we recently told you about.

Used one of these for a long time now. I really like it despite some questions on it's usefulness at the beginning.

Maybe they've finally found the way to sell 100.000 wrongly sized cases... like the warped ones, for the latest smartphone...

This looks ugly. I wonder if the smartwatch will be a success.

I've seen one in real life. It's surprising how good it looks and it looks and feels really premium. I like it.

From the front its completely ruined by those awful dated looking exposed screw heads and from the side - its a real fatty!

What a terrible design! Samsung should of kept this in the lab. If Apple are working on a smartwatch of their own, they've got nothing to worry about here!

Even with all of its features, I don't want to be seen wearing this.

Ugly and except for the crappy 1.9 Megapixel wrist band, what makes it better than all the other smart watches out there?

This is the ugliest design for a smart watch I've ever seen.

Are you serious? The iWatch design looks like a toy watch compared to this, and this is the actual product we are looking at, not some fantasy mockup.

Are YOU serious? We don't even know if Apple is making an iWatch at all, you yourself even said anything we've seen is "fantasy" from people not even at Apple - so why would it matter if they looked like "toys"?

The fact is that the Samsung watch needs no comparison to anything to be considered ugly; it earns that distinction on the merits.

In real life it looks and feels way better than you'd think.

How is this better than just reaching a few extra inches to my pocket for my phone?

To play devil's advocate, with phones getting bigger and bigger your question might be rephrased as "How is this better than reaching into my purse or jacket pocket for my phone?" Or if you need to check the latest email and you're walking down the street, there's less chance of dropping a phone or banging into someone if you're reading it on your watch.

It depends in what direction smartphones go. It might make sense for people to carry a small tablet instead, alongside a smartwatch for phonecalls and quick reading.

Then don't buy one. For me it'll be quite useful.
