Google to offer all of Nik’s software plugins for $149

218
You can now purchase all Nik desktop plugins, like Dfine, as demonstrated using this shot by Peter Eastway, in a bundled package.

When Google recently announced that it was pulling support for the desktop version of Nik’s Snapseed editing software, people started to worry what this meant for the rest of Nik’s non-mobile products. But a new announcement today from Google has the company not only recommitting to these plugins, but also dramatically dropping the price.

Today the company announced the Nik Collection by Google, which is every single one of Nik’s desktop plugins in a single bundle, for just $149. This marks the end of them being sold as separates, and for that flat fee, you get Dfine® 2.0, Viveza® 2, HDR Efex Pro™ 2, Color Efex Pro™ 4 Complete Edition, Silver Efex Pro™ 2, and Sharpener Pro™ 3.0.

Previously, individual plugins would run around the $100 mark, with a bundle of all of them costing as much as $500. The new, $149 bundle will not just feature all six plugins, but will work on all supported applications from a single installer: Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Apple Aperture.

I talked to Josh Haftel, Product Manager at Google, who told me that this new bundle is all but identical to the previously available versions, with the only changes of note being an all-in-one installer, and Google branding. He also commented that Google plans to continue to develop and support Nik software’s plugins, saying:

“We definitely plan to continue developing and evolving the software. This is our first release and by bringing this under the Google brand, we hope to show our commitment not only to Nik users, but to the photography community at large.”

If you previously bought any of these plugins, Google isn’t going to leave you in the cold for already having dropped a lot of money. If you purchased any individual plugin within the last five years, you get the entire collection for free. If you spent more than $149 on plugins since February 22nd of this year, you’ll be refunded the difference.

This is a mammoth reduction in software price, and should make it much easier for amateur and semi-pro photographers to afford these plugins. You can take a demo of the software for a 15-day trial from Nik Software’s website.

Here are the full system requirements to run the plugins, courtesy of Google:

Macintosh:

  • Mac® OS 10.6.8 through 10.8
  • Intel processor
  • 2GB of RAM (4 GB or more recommended)
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 (CS5 for HDR Efex Pro 2) through CS6

Well what can I say I have been running PSE 8 since it came out and never felt the need to upgrade this basic program so I have used it as my base platform & all I have done is just added plugins to customise it to my needs.
The latest is Niks bundle.
Worst bits? Sharpening not as good as my plugin version of focus magic
Noise control ?again easily beaten by Noise ninja plugin
Best bits? Silver efex, HDR pro 2 (Yes it runs fine on my ancient PSE8 along with all the other progs.
All that is on a 64bit windows 8.1 laptop which I have seen posts from people saying it wont run PSE8.
I used to use Photomatix HDR but this NIK kit IMHO knocks it into a cocked hat
The price is the real brilliant bit although I have not had it long to really study all its abilities, boy do you get a lot for your bucks or in my case pounds all 90 odd of them.
I will stick to my OnOne mask as I have not found anything that is better but overall this Nik's bundle of goodies is first rate some bits are superb

When I purchased Corel Paintshop Pro X5 I chose the 'Ultimate' version as, for the extra cost, I received a number of plug ins, including NIK creative filters. Whilst I like the Corel programme, and the filters are very useful, I find it is very slow and often locks up, to the point where I am considering switching to Lightroom 5. Will I be able to install the NIK applications which I downloaded from Corel to Lightroom or do I need to purchase the plug ins again?

I just purchased the Nik Software on the Google site for 149. The first time I attempted to download the product I received the following message:

Download Failed
The download link you clicked on has exceeded the maximum number of download attempts. To download your software, please contact us by visiting help.google.com/nikcollection.

That link is broken. I found a link that should allow me to send a message to their support team but that is also broken. I would call except There is no phone number listed on the site where is gives their available times but there is no phone number. Can someone help get to the people at Google. I see that someone ordered the product on the phone and got a product in 5 minutes.

I feel a little ripped off at this point.

For what it's worth, when Google took down the old Nik site, they threw away the great collection of recipes Nik had. Only way to find them, and they may not be up-to-date, is by going to web.archive.org.

If you have installed the Nik Collection but still don't see anything in the "Edit In" menu in +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom then goto to Lightroom Preferences ( Mac ) and uncheck then uncheck "Store presets with catalog".

I just got off the phone with support ( it was an interesting phone call ).

The new software agreement for Nik Collection by Google:

1. Welcome to the Nik Collection by Google!
Thanks for your interest in the Nik Collection by Google (the “Service”)!
By downloading and using the Service, you agree to the following terms, in addition to the Google Terms of Service (the "Google ToS"), collectively the “Terms.” For clarity, Google's provision of the Service described in these Terms constitutes a “Service” as defined in the Google ToS.

David,

It's the standard Google Terms of Service for Google Services. I find it odd that a piece of software comes with a "Service" agreement instead of the normal software license agreement.

Despite the fact that I eventually got my free upgrade I'm not overly optimistic for the future of NIK products at all.

Right now it looks as if the full installer for NIK by Google doesn't employ any kind of copy protection. Neither a product key nor any kind of online activation/registration seem to be required. I could just give the EXE or DMG to a friend on a USB flash drive, couldn't I? People will definitely try and my guess is that they are going to be successful.

So do Google intentionally try to shoot their own foot? I don't think so. The free giveaways and the massively slashed price don't seem to make sense at first glance but they might just be the bait to hook as many people as possible before turning the whole thing into a cloud-based distribution on a subscription basis.

Of course you can continue to use your current version but at some point it will become obsolete/incompatible and then you'll have to swallow Google's bitter subscription pill or say bye-bye.

I think you'll find there'll be a phone home component to the software. Once found, it should be pretty easy to kill by editing your localhosts file I suspect. Not that I'm encouraging piracy, but I strongly dislike underhanded tactics from software vendors too. I'm a firm believer that our respective governments need to far more heavily police software vendors that they current do (not at all). Consumers have no rights under current software TOS/licences and it's the only consumer product that does this.

I've got both Photoshop CS6 and lightroom 4, can I install the plugins to both pieces of software simultaneously and use them both? Or only pick one of the software pieces and use the plugins with that only?

Also, if I understand correctly, there are no product keys required to get the software running, just simply install the plugins via the downloaded exe file?

Update for those who are registered users but haven't received any notification and download E-mail yet:

You have to contact Google through the contact form in the support section of the NEW NIK Google page. My mistake was to use some links in old mails which took me to me to the old NIK page which for whatever reason is still online and does not always redirect you to the Google page.

Apparently there's no possibility to check your previous registration and product keys on the NEW page as you could on the old page. So I would recommend to have the product key of at least one of your NIK products at hand. The contact form does have a field where you can enter this product key separately.

That's what I did - you'll receive a confirmation mail that a Google support case has been opened - and two days later I received an answer which also provided the download link.

Thank you, Google for the quick and valuable support.

So I try to email support and cannot get past the infomation required to send the email. So I try to find the telephone number for support and it is nowhere to be found. I'm on Windows 7 64 bits. When I first tried the program wouldn't seem to open. Then I clicked on a second photo and it worked. It seems that the first time you choose "Edit in .. ." It take a little time to launch the Nik window. But then everything was fine for me. I have noted that sometime on my computer the active window can get masked by another while you wait it to show up.. Using alt+Tab can bring it up.
I don't think tha was really the problem here, because I didn't find the Nik window in the background.. But the few added seconds I waited after that let the program window appear.

I had no problem to install the new package, but doing so none of the product keys I had are now showing up ! This makes me wonder whether I haven't just installed the trial version ?

They didn't mail me any new key either. So now I fear that the next time there is an update, I will have to ay full price !

Further, I could have made without the full collection because the only program I'm really using in fact is Silver Effex. So what does that mean ? Next time I will have to pay for a full version ? Doubly full : full because I've got no new serial to make an update and full because the separate components are no more available ?

I have the feeling that we older customers will be ripped in the future. They should rather disclose their plans..

Really? I just found the email and am excited about having the entire suite for the price of one program. I don't understand all of the "gift horsing", (looking a gift horse in the mouth) going on. I don't see this as a gift. I see this as "Google bought Nik for Snapseed and so they could add photo features to Google+ or Picassa" and so this is an offering to help reduce the backlash when Nik/Google abandons us next year.

I do believe you. Google's kiss is pure venom.

Whatever they touch then gets gnawed down to the bones and the parts that are not relevant to them. When they're finished the carcass is then dumped for "free". Think we can already prepare for the eulogy on Google's NIK website announcing the death of NIK software in the form as we know it today.

I had the same problem in Windows 7 and solved it by opening Windows Explorer and deleting everything after full.exe. since adding .exe didn't work. If you can't see the full file extension, click tools, then folder options, then view, and then uncheck hide extensions for known file types. Then you can see what to delete.

I was a sceptic, but once I watched some of the videos on the Nik web site and tried it out for myself , I'm a convert - the control points really do make editing faster, and this is what these plugins are all about - you can do all this stuff manually in PS, sure, but using these plugins is faster and a lot more fun at the end of the day. Anyway, just finished installing the collection (don't need to uninstall any individual NIK programs), tried the old and new, and all I can say is "wow." (Turns out I did need those other two after all.) I'm on OSX 10.8.2 and PS CS6 Suite. Absolutely no problem. Congratulations, Google, for shepherding these programs to ensure their continuity. The file downloded OK (Windows) but the file lost its ".exe" extension in the process for some reason and windows couldn't recognise the file. Either windows cannot recognise the file or a click on the downloaded file opens Photoshop with the message "not the right kind of document." Unable to add .exe, as previously suggested to download file as I am not allowed anymore downloads. (Can this be done after I have downloaded the faulty file that is sitting in "My Downloads") Have also discovered through your article that being a registered owner of Sharpener Pro 3.0 I need not have paid $149. I'm having the same problem. Some links take me to the old NIK website, where the products are still offered at the previous retail prices, or I get to the new "Googelized" NIK site where I can buy for 149 $ or try for 15 days.

On the new page there seems to be no way of checking my registered products, thus no free upgrade. And if you read the comments of people their full collection was usually obtained through a download link in an unsolicited e-mail from NIK/Google.

But if you fell through during the transfer opt-in from old NIK to Google as it apparently happened to me or decided against it: no mail, no link, no free upgrade.

I see that whole communication and distribution model as at least sleazy and intransparent, but well, that's Google as we know it. I've now requested my upgrade via e-mail and they put it on hold due to "high workload" caused by "new software releases".

No, the overall impression that Google leaves here isn't exactly that of true professionalism.

Check your email that you're registered at with Nik (you DID register, right?)

Strangely enough, I had to check my SPAM GMAIL folder to find the Nik email. The irony wasn't lost on me :D

I'm registered of course, my e-mail provider even notifies me about new spam in quarantine ("You have 'n' new mails in your spam folder!") - however there's nothing.

The only place where I can actually check my registration is the old NIK Software website which I can still access through some old links in my e-mail exchange with them. So this information is not lost yet Google can't "find" it. And yes, I have opted for the transfer of my customer and registration data to Google.

But Google being unable to "find" some pieces of information they themselves had been asking for - this somewhat strikes me at least as ironic as blocking their own mail as spam.

I have Color Efex Pro 2 on my old Mac that I replaced in December. There is an option to upgrade to Color Efex Pro 4 for $99.95 which I could then have on my new computer on their website. Does anyone know if this would then entitle me to the whole bundle?

I think I might need to ask the question to them directly anyway as for some odd reason although I am registered on their website and can download Color Efex Pro 2 any time I want it does not recognise the same serial number for the upgrade which it clearly should do.

Sorry for being a pessimist here, but we are talking about Google. Does this mean:
1. This product is no longer a priority and won't see further development?
2. Will we start seeing tons of Google ads in the product?

A year ago people said the same thing when they were bought, however so far all we have seen is continued development and a substantial reduction in price.

@ Kananga - apart from an all-in-one installer and Google branding, there has been no changes to the software. Hopefully, we'll see some new stuff soon?

@ Kananga, what development? Development seems to have been frozen. Not even support for Retina Macs (it works, but it uses a scaled display mode rather than native Retina).

And while I'm pleased by the announcement of their intention to evolve the product, I just hope it means adding new filters and features, not just transitioning it to a cloud based subscription service.

Been a Snapseed user for quite a while and at this price they just got my money. Thanks to Martin Bailey Photography for the 15% off and to Google for the price drop.

I bought Color Efex Pro a week ago for $200, so was delighted to receive the news that I could now get a $50 refund and the rest of the plug-ins for free.

However, when I try Google's link for the free download, I just get a page saying "The download link you clicked on has exceeded the maximum number of download attempts. To download your software, please contact us by visiting help.google.com/nikcollection." I got that the first time, and every other time I've tried the link.

On that supposed Help page, there's nothing about Nik, so I'm stuck. Has anybody found a way around this?

The question is:
when Google release online graphical editor with layers and RAW convertor which can use Nik Collection by Google ?

Or Nik Collection by Google for Gimp ... ?
of course, there would be a small problem with Ubuntu on tablets and smartphones ...

As a photoshop plugin, they are useful in Gimp if they are of .8bf or .scm extension plugins.

To install .scm plugins, just dump them into /.gimp-2.8/plugins.

To install .8bf, see Gimp's Help pages.

I would like to try it but when I click on the try it box another box appears to enter my email address. When my mouse goes over it, it vanishes! So I am left rather frustrated!! Can anyone offer any advice? I'm using Windows 7 and IE.

Is this valid for all users or just US ones?

I've bought Silver Efex 2 and Colour Efex Pro (3 and 4) as UK customer less than 5 years ago and I haven't received an email with the link to the free download still.

Cheers

Nice surprise for a change, got email offering free upgrade, and the apps now work in Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop, where as my previous version was for Lightroom only, I must say I prefer to use them with Photoshop and layers.

Nice might pick it up. If you know how to edit in light room or photo, I assume you don't need these filter right?

These are actually plug-ins for Lightroom. You won't be able to do multiple image HDR and tone mapping in Lightroom.
