Mozilla to release its own mobile operating system

0
Firefox is working with Acetel, LG and ZTE to develop smartphones to run the Firefox OS.

Ubuntu isn't the only Android, Apple and Windows challenger at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Mozilla has revealed its own mobile operating system. Firefox OS will offer an Android alternative for devices and will be available in Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela later this year.

Mozilla hopes to open up mobile to more web apps. So far, the HTML5 operating system will be available on a few low-end devices—the Alcatel One Touch Fire smartphone doesn't have the most impressive specs—but it will expand to more devices and countries as interest rises in the new operating system.

So far, Firefox's limited release on low-end hardware doesn't have us too excited about its mobile photography capabilities, but we will keep watching as Mozilla's mobile operating system expands its release.
