Asus announces affordable tablets with impressive specs

The MeMO Pad HD tablets from Asus are being compared to Google's Nexus line.

Asus has announced two new tablets: the 7-inch MeMO Pad HD 7 and the 10-inch MeMO Pad FHD 10. The 7-inch tablet has earned comparison to Google's Nexus 7 tablet based on specs and appearance.

With a 5-megapixel rear camera, the MeMO Pad HD 7 is arguably more appealing to mobile photographers than the rear camera-less Nexus 7. And while the device's quad-core processor, 1280 x 880 display and Android 4.2 operating system are attractive, so is the MeMO Pad HD 7's price tag. The Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 will be available in July at $129 for 8GB and $149 for 16GB — $50 cheaper than the Nexus 7.

No word yet of the pricing for the 10-inch version of Asus' new tablet, but if the 7-inch version is any indication, we can hope it to be priced under Google's Nexus 10 ($399 for 16GB, $499 for 32GB).

A design it with such a large bezel looks outdated even before it hits the shelves. Of course, if that's the only thing one's looking for then why not stick with Apple, you might say...

$129 is an amazing price. Especially since it is 10% lighter than the already light Nexus 7. I just wish it comes with GPS and compass.

Asus doesn't get the tablet market. It's not about specs, it's about the experience. Asus and companies like them are applying outmoded PC thinking to tablets. Best of luck to them.
