Rumors circulate of a new 41-megapixel Nokia phone

The 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView (maximum output 38MP) was the last device to run the Symbian operating system.

After its newfound profitability, Nokia is moving forward with its line of pixel-packing PureView smartphones. The Verge has sources claiming that the new phones—codenamed EOS—will be made out of a sleeker aluminum and will have squared edges. In addition to the fresh look, the smartphones will have a high-megapixel sensor similar to the 41MP 808 PureView.

Nokia confirmed at this morning’s earnings announcement that the 808 PureView was its last phone to run the Symbian smartphone operating system. According to The Verge, the new “EOS” hardware will be Nokia’s first true Windows Phone 8 PureView device.

By shedding Symbian and adopting Window Phone 8 on PureView smartphones, Nokia has the potential to combine super high-megapixel hardware with excellent capture and editing software from the ever-evolving Windows Phone store.

The 920 already does a nice job with it's camera!

did you downsize the picture to 0.5MP to hide the aggressive noise reduction? I think 2MP should be perfectly sharp, to be of use, but the output of the 920 clearly shows lack of detail at 2MP. (and the 8MP is just useless, the 808 is way sharper at 38MP, than the 920 is at 8MP)

First they fire R&D department and now this? I bet they'll take good old 808 and install Windows Phone on top of it. In other words: boring niche product.

It would be great, if they used a higher processing bit-depth for the RAW-data; even an option for RAW-output would be nice! And: 4K video recording with 1x or 2x zoom. Or TRUE 1080p with 4:4:4 chroma subsampling in the new h265-codec and using the new opus audio codec for multi-channel surround.
