ZTE (formerly Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment Corporation), the world’s fourth-largest mobile phone maker, announced the phone last month. According to the Google-translated version Chinese microblogging site Weibo’s coverage of the product announcement, the Nubia Z5 is “a great mystery” with an “Italian design,” 13-megapixel camera, 5-inch screen and quad-core CPU.

Bloggers have noted that the Nubia Z5 is curiously similar in appearance to the HTC One X despite the manufacture’s claims of “Italian design.” ZTE has not yet announced what operating system will be available for the Nubia Z5 nor have they released the full specs. It aims to have the phone out to Asian markets in December.

It is unclear if the Nubia Z5 will ever be released outside of Asia, but mobile photographers everywhere may see the Z5 as another sign of a rising megapixel standards for camera phones to come. While the current industry standard seems to hover around 8 megapixels, the Sony Xperia T  and LG Optimus G from Sprint also both boast 13-megapixel cameras.

What do you think: Is 13 the new 8?
