Quick Review: Find your inner artist with AurynCam

Free in the App Store; requires iOS 5.0 or later; compatible with iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (3rd generation) and later, and iPad.
With a few simple taps, AurynCam encourages your inner impressionist painter to emerge.
The artistic interpretations are plentiful, and we had fun spinning the scrolling dial of image filters to create Van Gogh-inspired sunflowers, and other looks, in a matter of seconds.
The app feels simple enough, and leads you through a helpful introductory tutorial, but we still had a bit of trouble with the UI.
We had no problems shooting and importing images (an unusual feature: the Safari button opens a Google search for images straight from the web, though you'll still have to download them, reopen the app and then import them). The scrolling wheel of image filters was a snap, and most additional options from there were self-explanatory. Tap the crop button to condense your image within a wide selection of ratios, tap the photo effects button to choose from filtering effects of a more photographic nature or tap the borders button for numerous framing choices. We loved that the preview windows at the bottom of the screen allow you to continuously scroll through the possibilities in a loop.
However, the blend button gave us pause. It wasn't immediately apparent that we needed to import another image via the green plus button in order for the effects to work. Once we resolved this, we were enticed by the potential of this feature. Note that it may work better if the first photo you brought in isn't run through a heavy filter first.
On that point: We do wish there was control over filter strength, many of these are quite strong.
Once you've achieved a look you're happy with, you can share your image to AurynCam's own photo sharing network, or post directly to Facebook, Twitter or Flickr, but we were surprised we couldn't export to Instagram.
AurynCam's ability to quickly make works of art out of your photos convinced us that it's worth a play, especially for free. Additionally, the app goes beyond the wheelhouse of most photo filter apps with its social networking features. Like Instagram, you'll create your own user profile, follow other users, comment on and like AuyrnCam images and discover the work others are creating using the app.
No word yet on when Android and Windows users may see AurynCam on those platforms.
What we like: Fun filters make any image look like art.
What we don't like: User interface shouldn't be confusing for an app this simple. No Instagram integration.
