Google quietly releases volume capture with Android 4.3

4
Android 4.3 was released for Nexus devices in late July.

When Google released the latest version of its Android operating system last month, it made no mention of updates to its camera app.

Now, as Android users are downloading the new software and exploring its functions, at least one new feature is emerging as a surprise.

Over at the blog Android Pit, writer Loie Favre was thrilled to find out that Google quietly included a camera feature that iOS has had for quite some time: with Android 4.3, users can capture a photo by pressing the volume button.

All users of "stock Android" devices can already download Android 4.3. So if you are using a Nexus smartphone or a Google Play edition Galaxy S4 or HTC One, you should have already received a notification to download Android 4.3.

If you have a different flavor of Jelly Bean — designed by either your device's manufacturer, cellular provider or sometimes both — you are going to have to wait a bit longer to get the update notification.

Impatient Android early adaptors can always manually check for operating system improvements in Settings->About->System Updates.

That doesn't really do anything. It still depends if your device is in the queue from Google to be pushed for the update. Since you would get a notification anyway when that happens, that "check for updates" button is just there for the OCD.

IMHO the zoom is a better use for the volume rocker, hope that at least this will be customizable...

The Nexus 7 gen II tablet running Android 4.3 is simply great. Beautiful design and superb display.

This one will be easy to catapult to the landfill site. Waste waste and more waste. Thanks Google for destroying the planet.
