Since its successful Kickstarter campaign in 2011, Triggertrap has been helping photographers control DSLR cameras with its smartphone application. Now, the UK-based team has developed a tool specialized for high-speed photography.
The Triggertrap Flash Adapter activates any hotshoe- equipped flash from an iPhone using a specialized mobile dongle, flash adapter and iOS app. The idea with the special Triggertrap Flash Adapter is that if you are trying to catch a bullet mid-flight, it is very difficult to do so if the flash is connected to your camera.
To use the Triggertrap Flash Adapter, you start by opening up the camera's shutter to a long exposure. Next, you use the sound-activated Triggertrap app for iOS to activate your flash, allowing a big noise, say the pop of a balloon full of red-colored liquid, to trigger the flash milliseconds after the sound occurs, illuminating your high-speed subject at just the right moment. If conditions are ideal, you can freeze the action.
Triggertrap is working on updating its Android app to accommodate the Triggertrap Flash Adapter. In the meantime, iOS users can get the whole kit for around $55.
