Huawei launches Ascend Mate 7 premium device

0

The Ascend Mate 7 is Chinese manufacturer Huawei's competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and has premium device written all over it. Its 6-inch 1080p IPS screen is framed by extremely thin bezels which means that the overall dimensions are smaller than some competitors with smaller screens and Huawei's EMUI 3.0 offers some adjustable control elements, allowing for one-handed use even with the Mate 7's large screen. The 7.9mm thin device frame is manufactured from a single piece of metal and overall the entire device looks very nicely made.

Inside, Android 4.4 is powered by a Kirin 925 octa-core chipset and the battery offers a massive 4100 mAh capacity. Combined with some clever battery saving algorithms Huawei claims that this is good for approximately 2.3 days of medium or 1.3 days of heavy use. Other useful features include a fingerprint reader that allows for secure one-touch unlocking of the device and dual-SIM capability. One of the SIM-slots doubles as a microSD slot which looks like a nice piece of engineering.

Compared to some of these clever features the camera specification looks a little pedestrian. The camera module comes with a 13MP Sony sensor and an F2 maximum aperture. The equivalent focal length is a pretty wide 28mm. At the front you'll find a 5MP unit for self-portraits and video chats. The fingerprint sensor can be used as a shutter button, which is a nice touch, but as you would expect it does not offer the two-way action of a proper physical shutter button.

The Ascend Mate 7 standard version will be available in silver or black from October at a retail price of 499 Euros (approximately US$ 650). The premium version, which doubles the standard version's storage to 32GB and comes with 3 instead of 2GB of RAM, will be available in gold only and set you back 599 Euros (approximately US$ 775).
